I don’t want to make up some pretentious crap for my artwork…
not want
also we need to bring in lighting for the exhibition
what the frick?!
maybe I’ll just bring in a desk lamp haha
Also, does anyone know where I can get a piano accordian?
hey i nicked an awesome bag that was lying in the art store room, it’s all old and leathery, makes me feel like a uni student lolol.
I fell down the stairs today with my visual diary today, I’m so clumsy, the whole front of my leg was quite badly bruised and grazed and i cant really feel my leg :p I have to limp lol, and I was thinking art would finally be the death of me, not far from the truth.
Also some little yr 8 bitches saw me fall down the stairs, not only did they walk past but i heard “eww look at her leg” after i got up.
yet another spasm from me fd;sakjhf;d
anyway, i don’t get it?
I was clearly in pain, and thats the only word of advise they had?
haha
sorry
i sound really arrogant and pathetic right now.
but since when have we been so shallow that we even forget some basic manners?
it’s like if my head had fallen off the response would have been “eww put it away”
Also, I would like express my complaints about a certain school and their sexist behaviour
One girl in our year received a report of the calculus exam (from this school) that basically expressed how much better they were than our school, the sexist remarks were all highlighted.
I’m sorry, I’m just sick of the snide sexist remarks, would you sent a report to a homeless Aboriginal man, stating such generalizations that all Aboriginals are homeless?
what good does this do?
i’m sick of: “go back to the kitchen where you belong” “It’s because you’re a girl”
It’s the same as joking about racism and religion (although, I’m a little grey about that area), and anything else you can’t help.
I’ve laughed it off enough
but when someone gets their calculus exam back after studying their arse off for it, to receive a report that has little use but to point out how “stupid” girls are…
I guess, I’m starting to question my friends right now.
oh well.
have you heard
“If you have a racist friend”?
it goes like this
” If you have a racist friend
now is the time now is the time
for your friendship to end
be it your sister
or your brother
or auntie or your uncle or your brother”
anyway, I don’t think that we are at a stage where we can joke about it,
my sister told me i should just laugh about my leg like the people who stood around laughing at me
i’m in too much pain right now to laugh
one in three women in South Africa are raped in their life
the government condemns condoms
a woman with AIDS is an outcast to a community
there is a violently misogynistic tradition to the South African people
one of the main causes for AIDS
I’m not going to laugh about sexism just yet.
although I know women have to stand up for themselves now, It’s hard to argue sexism when there are girls going all out just to please men, objectifying themselves, I do know that it needs effort from women and men.
anyway, another angry rant
can’t believe you read it all
XD

Oh, wow. Let’s see.
First off… it’s nice to see someone actually reacting to misogyny in culture, in everyday life. It’s ridiculous, and most people just don’t care. The apathy towards it is ridiculous. You said you’ve laughed it off enough, you shouldn’t laugh it off. Too many people take feminism forgranted.
I just have to say, though… and don’t take this as vitriolic criticism… but I find it ironic that in a blog post about sexism you use the word “slut” as a pejorative. The word slut is one of the worst in the English lexicon. In a society that views women as property, female sexuality is not her own. A premium is put on female chastity, and only female chastity because of the fact that women are viewed as property; men are free from contraints on their promiscuity. In fact, it’s encouraged, it’s a sign of power.
Women aren’t property. Women don’t have to define their sexuality by a man and what a patriarchal society wants from them. Sex is pleasurable, and there is nothing wrong with a woman wanting sex. A sexually empowered female isn’t a slut.
I hope this makes some kind of sense… you just kind of hit a nerve there :P I just really *loathe* this societal view that women can either be a Madonna or a Whore. As I said, women aren’t property.

In a way I agree with you xald but when you look at it slut is used just the same as any derogatory term. Why is slut constantly thrown around as inappropriate and demeaning to women while faggot and retarded are used commonly without as much fuss. I’m especially concentration on retarded hear as society has never seemed to have a problem with calling something retarded.
Also I think these words aren’t as derogatory any more. How many times have you heard one friend call another friend a slut, whore, faggot, nigger, cunt ect. I know that I hear this daily within my group of friends and I know that none of these words are meant with mal intent. These words get thrown around enough now days that none of them are as effective anymore as a actual attack on someone.

It’s probably another bad habit, like i used to say gay when something was bad.
I’ve put in a solid effort to stop that now, seeing as associating anything bad with a term usually means that although, maybe not intending to, you are demeaning that group.
So! and although, roofpooldeck, you have pointed out that i wasn’t accusing this girl of being promiscuous, by using that word, I shall consider it the same as ‘gay’ and ‘retarded’, which shouldn’t be used at all, in a derogitory way.

@roofpooldeck I can understand that, but the word slut is a pet hate of mine. It reinforces conservative ideology about women and female libido. Nigger and Faggot, we know these words are derogatory towards the subject. The ideology behind slut is accepted and reinforced in many ways, though. I realise what you’re saying, the meaning isn’t implied, but it hit a nerve.
@lantacko i should apply that attitude to my own life

From wikipedia: “sexism is the belief or attitude that one gender or sex is inferior to or less valuable than the other and can also refer to a hatred or distrust towards either sex as a whole (see also misogyny and misandry), or creating stereotypes of masculinity for men or femininity for women”. Going by this, the markers report for the calculus exam was hardly sexist. The reality is, the average for the SMAGS cohort was about 15% lower than that of the Hale cohort, which is no small gap. While it is unfortunate and inappropriate that the marker’s report singled out the SMAGS cohort on several occasions, it is not “sexist”. It literally was correct; the St Mary’s cohort did not perform as well as the Hale one. I’d also like to point out that while the exam was set by Hale, it was marked by all the calculus teachers, including the SMAGS teacher. The report was written by all of the calculus teachers as well. If you had actually read the report, you’d see that while the report singled out the girls, it was never derogatory, just matter of fact (perhaps TOO matter of fact).
Of course sexism still exists, we’re not exactly a progressive society. But how can you simoultaneously glorify the exploits of Audrey Hepburn, and complain about ingrained sexism in our society. And you missed a large part in your critique of sexism, misandry. It does exist. It’s highly ironic that you use the word “sexist” as if it applies only to male chauvinism.
“it’s nice to see someone actually reacting to misogyny in culture, in everyday life. It’s ridiculous, and most people just don’t care.” – You think a feminist view is unique? It’s not. It’s been happening for at least a hundred years. Heard of the suffragettes?

First of all, well done for defining sexism through wikipedia, such high levels of intellect it takes for one to have to search it on the internet.
I do in fact understand that sexism applies to both sides, but seeing as this problem affects me directly and I don’t know any girls who go about saying males are weak or less without any proof except their gender and rarely do I see men positioned purely for their outer appearences in the media.
I’m not going to go about arguing for them, you can do that yourself (If you are male).
Also, I havn’t heard of female porn, or a whole industry who went by saying in their first page “If you’re somebody’s sister, wife or mother-in-law and picked us up by mistake, please pass us along to the man in your life and get back to your ‘Ladies Home Companion’. There has never been a female Australian Prime Minister and when women are members of parliment, they tend to be heavily scrutinized by the media solely about their hair, makeup and clothes, it is not surprising that they don’t get far.
I’m not denying that Hale were better than Smags in the exam, but we don’t go around comparing our exams, It’s unnecessary for the examiners to tell the students, this achieves nothing, the teachers could have been told what it was that the smags students needed to improve on and that was all that needed to be said. I don’t do calculus, and I respect Hale, and it’s students, but I wasn’t happy with the way it went about this.
I believe that one day sexism, and any discrimination about sex or gender related issues will one day become as politically incorrect as racism.

Care to define it better? Not everyone has a full copy of the OED available at all times. Arguing on the internet is not quite the same as writing a thesis. I think wikipedia did a better job at addressing the term than this blog entry. I like the subtle gibe, nicely done.

You don’t need to tell me that sexism is the act of subordinating or marginalising a gender, you could just use your own common sense or knowledge.
If you and your ‘friend’ or whoever seems to be specifically targeting me are going to call yourselves ‘feminists@gofuckyourself.com’
I’m not sure who’s more subtle. Although If you have no idea who that person is I wont hold it to you, but they seem to be referring to you in collection.
I was not giving a definition of sexism in my blog, anyone can do that.
It was a simple, personal blog that merely complained about the violation of human rights in Africa, while giving it a personal spin.
I don’t know what your motive is, I’m am a little bit extreme on this blog at times but I don’t like being attacked with obscene language, and sarcasim and naturally i will tend to react similarly.
It is good you commented because I’m taking it all in and I understand that what I say often condescends other things, but no one is perfect and I am fairly biased at times, but most people are.
You seem to be getting a bit carried away with your claims, it’s obvious we have different views, and I’m not going to change unless I suddenly see that women should be objectified and supressed.

yo yo
What’s wrong with using wikipedia? wikipedia rules. And besides, that’s probably just a transcript of a dictionary definition. Besides, this adds nothing to the overall argument, so stop cheap-shotting. And what do you mean girls don’t stereotype men based on gender? Women always claim men are emotionally stunted (by virtue merely of being men) and insensitive. This is exactly the same thing as men do when they claim women are better suited to nurturing children than men, or are highly emotional. So, you are right that “sexism applies to both sides” but then you go ahead and completely contradict yourself by saying that you “don’t know any girls” who go about making assumptions about men “without any proof except their gender”. Then you make an even worse point by suggesting men in the media are not there solely for their “outer appearances”. Brad Pitt, David Beckhad, Matthew Macconaghey (how the fuck do you spell that? He was in that fools gold movie anyway). Want more examples, because there are many. My other problem with this argument is that there are many unattractive women in the media, take Meryl Streep or Helen Mirren. Both highly respected female actors who are also unattractive. Stop blaming the failure of some ugly females on some invented male vice.
So you haven’t heard of female porn? Well i haven’t heard of ‘male porn’ either. Porn is porn. You make another linguistic faux pas when you say ‘I haven’t heard of… a whole industry who went by saying in their first page “If you’re somebody’s sister, wife or mother-in-law and picked us up by mistake, please pass us along to the man in your life and get back to your ‘Ladies Home Companion’’. If you haven’t heard of one, what is there to complain about?
But seriously, I understand your point in saying that (albeit awkwardly) and I’d like to know what company this is. That’s clear sexism, fair enough, i agree. But then you complain that there has never been a female prime minister. You attribute this to the fact that “they tend to be heavily scrutinized by the media solely about their hair, makeup and clothes”. To me, it is unsurprising that the media focusses on this, because the women themselves place so much emphasis on what they wear. How much was it Sarah Palin spent on wardrobe during the election? It was in tens of thousands. Maybe if these women pulled their heads out of their asses and came to terms with the fact that no one cares what they wear (most female politicians are ugly anyway, despite what you say about all women in the media being there solely due to attractiveness) then we might pay attention and listen to what they say.
Women are no more stigmatised than black people. Racism and sexism are both fairly well extinguished. Today a black man was voted president in the US. This is a tolerant society. Of course there are still hardcore pockets of sexists and racists, but it is not feasible to hope to extinguish these altogether. With regards to the Hale issue, like a lot of modern feminists, you’re taking a simple joke and turning it into a civil rights crusade. The Hale boys were simply teasing the St Marys girls (with whom, I would like to add, they are friends). You have blown this issue out of proportion. It was just a joke. Noone was trying to subjugate or oppress you.
And sexism pretty much is as politically incorrect as racism anyway. Stop pretending to be so victimised. Boring. Next.

if you found it boring, why did you comment it?
do you find it boring because you don’t care about it?
so, some people do care about it.
I don’t like Sarah palin and I think that she is quite scary.
I admit that that claim was over the top about Hale
but I am sick of this constant joking around the matter, when it’s just taken over the top.
I’m sick of boys telling me to ‘go back to the kitchen’
I will stop complaining when gender biase is out of the voting process.
it’s still possible to obtain a pro-Obama “Bro’s Before Ho’s” t-shirt online
Vogue stated Hillary Clinton’s ‘Look’ as Too Mannish, (I’m criticising women as well)
Research shows that in movies for families/children, boys are a majority of the main characters and narrators. ["Where the Girls Aren't: Gender Disparity Saturates G-Rated Films"go to "Research"; research by SeeJane.org and the Annenburg School of Communication 2006.]
anyway, I’m sick of the objectification of women and if you want some proof of it in parliment you can go to http://www.thewhitehouseproject.org
they have plenty of proof to say that it still is a problem.
I’m not just going to dismiss it, I’m not angry, I just know that we still have a fair way to go, as women still feel the need to spend thousands of dollars on making themselves look good, maybe this is just a ‘feel good’ thing, or you might say we bring it on ourselves but that is only part of the problem.
I don’t know why you must argue this with me, this is just a view that I have developed over time, I do talk about other things on this blog, there are plenty of other issues here you could argue about as well.
also, I was simply stating that I don’t know anyone who talked down guys due to their gender, I personally don’t like Australia’s gender roles given to men, however, it is a role that is seen as more powerful than women.
This should not have made you so angry if you found it boring.
I know these people are friends, which is why I don’t see how they would treat each other like that, marks are a touchy matter.
Women put effort into their looks because otherwise they will be labeled as lesbian.
it’s a gross generalization but it has happened to people I know who have been labelled a lesbian because they don’t shave their legs or they don’t conform to beliefs that women should behave submissively.
I’m not angry or over-doing this, these are simply thoughts that I have had, which I havn’t completely made my mind up about.
this is just over the top, but if any thing, it’s confirmed my views.
I’m sick of this argument.

Sarah Palin doesn’t count, she does’t believe in polar bears.
The reason women spend so much money on their outward appearences is because they are so objectified. To have anyone pay any attention to them in the first place they have to look good.
People critisised Palin for spending so much money to look good, but I bet you that she would be just as critisised if she wasn’t well dressed.
Also, have you heard how much McCain has spent on his suits? I could quote a figure for you but I can’t because we havn’t heard. Maybe this proves how we judge female politicians on their physical appearences rather than their policies. Even though Palin’s policies are complete bollocks, we didn’t really hear much about them because they were so obsessed with her wardrobe.
